History
The beginning of diabetes was first founded in 1910 by English physiologist Sir Edward Albert Sharpey-Schafer, who was studying the pancreas. Although, insulin was discovered by Sir Edward Albert Sharpey-Schafer, the main influential voice to diabetes care is Elliott Joslin, MD. Joslin published the first edition of The Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus, which is a condition that is characterized by hyperglycemia. Over the years many more information about diabetes, insulin, and the effects were discovered. There is still research being done to improve life with diabetes and more awareness is being presented.
Statistics & Other Information
Diabetes is gender, age and ethnicity based. Statistically speaking this information was taken from American Diabetes Association, and these result are from 2011 and was released January 16, 2011. One of the reasons why Hispanics and non-Hispanic blacks have a higher percentage is due to the false belief that if you have money then you could eat well. Most of the time the eating well is eating too much which can lead to obesity and that can lead to diabetes. Many Hispanics and non-Hispanic blacks come from low income family and food might be a struggle. When there is money for food, it is usually not healthy. With diabetes there are many complications that can arise. Many of the complications include: heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, nervous system disease, and amputation. Another factor of diabetes is the cost of it. The cost of diabetes is roughly about $490 billion. The cost comes from diabetes diagnostics, direct medical cost, and prevention.

All three of these site are very informative to anyone who has diabetes, wants to learn more or is a supporter. Anyone can learn from all of these site and they are credible in the fact of who owns the page or site and also the amount of likes or followers. By having knowledge on diabetes, we can prevent others from getting diabetes and help stop the consequences associated with diabetes. Many people do not really know about diabetes except that it requires insulin. If age, gender, race and ethnicity all play a factor then this information should be told to everyone. it is always better to be know the information now and be able to prevent it rather than know later when it is to late.
My Reason
I have recently learned that my grandfather has diabetes. I always taught that blindness was just a factor of getting old but it is not only, that but if yo have diabetes you can also develop blindness. I now know some of the consequences my grandfather will endure if he does not monitor his diabetes. Growing up I have met a few people with diabetes. I remember one of my friend in elementary school who had diabetes. I was always amazed at how she always had to prick her finger just to get her blood sugar level. I am glad to not have diabetes but as I learn it can happen to anyone. If you do not take care of your weight, what you eat or drink, it can happen to you. As I was doing research i can across the statistics and notices that Hispanics and non-Hispanic blacks have a higher risk of developing diabetes. I hope to bring awareness to other and to prevent others from obtaining diabetes.
